New lucky shirt

Lucky shirt arrived in time for tomorrow's match,  although Jane will be the one needing a 'lucky shirt' to avoid tomorrow's thrashing!

Glad to be back into competition. Maybe by the end of the season I'll have worked out Margs' scoring system so I understand why I'm paying for everyone else's curry.

The Rams have never been able to repeat their glory days of the 70s but maybe this is the season when they will start. Anyway, here's the club logo just in case anyone is wondering why they are called the Rams.

For obvious and totally domestic reasons there are two Matches of the Day - let the banter begin!

Will Dan storm it past Anna in a similar fashion to his victory over Barnsley? Prior to that match however, Dan's team hadn't hit the back of the net.

Are the Sheppards on for another draw?

Welcome Kelly & Bristol City

So with the thought of Jim on a night out with the Curry-ers, Kelly couldn't resist joining the CCC.  The choice of team was Bristol City. A childhood connection - I don't think so. Was it the girl's logic ... girls that needed to choose new teams this year got bored looking down the list and Anna chose Burnley, Margs Bolton, Shirley Blackburn and Jane Charlton... or was it they were top of the available pile? At this early stage of the season it makes little difference and the amounts we are paying are the similar. Paula is down by another 0.5p in the pound and is probably ringing her mates now trying to get the last three teams taken up so her cost reduces again... (although actually it is an increase as the overall bill will be more pounds but we'll leave that logic till later!)

Welcome Derby & Jim (Jon)

Welcome Derby and Jim (Jon).  For those who may have missed the blog post Jim was disappointed that the Olympic blog was now footbally and he wasn't part of it. I assume he had gone back and checked the rules as he knew Derby (the team from his childhood) was still available and that it could cost him a lot of money.

It was an easy decision to let Jim join as he was a regular contributor to the Olympic blog - more interaction is needed, and the addition of his team meant that everyone was better off - Paula by 2p. Thanks Jim. (waiting to see if Kelly is going to join too.. Barnsley, Bristol City, Millwall and Peterborough still available).

CCC - Team of the Week - Shirley

From last week's Blackpool you can get to Blackburn on a 40minute train journey for less than £15, via the M55, M6 and M65 motorways or in five easy moves as per many quiz magazines:
Black-pool
-porl  (is in the Urban dictionary)
         - orn   (letter deliberately missed off so it won't get quarantined in work emails)
         -born
Black-burn

Whilst Lyn's tea declare Preston their arch rivals, as far as the CCC is concerned Shirley's Blackburn is their local derby whilst Margs' Bolton is nearer to them.

So why did Shirley choose Blackburn? This is the lady who lead the Euro Championship predictions competition for a considerable time and came a very respectable 3rd or 4th so her knowledge of football can not be underestimated.

Was is the fact that the owners have promised to sack the manager Steve Kean if they loose three games in a row and she is hoping for a new aspiring manager?  Was the name Rover the name of a former pet dog? Or did the section on the web-site called Ewood emails catch her eye?  Maybe she liked the sense of humour shown by the fans when they let loose a chicken draped in club colours at last season's Premiership match against Wigan.  The act was a protest against the owner's Venky,  an Indian chicken meat processing company.  Perhaps it is the hope for free chicken?
However, maybe with Shirley's footballing knowledge it was the fact that the captain of the New Zealand All Whites, Ryan William Nelsen signed for Blackburn on a free contract in January 2005.
6 months later he signed a 3 year deal taking his place in a strong Premiership defensive lineup having been awarded a work permit on appeal after the initial application had been refused due to New Zealand being ranked outside the top 70 in World Fifa rankings (are they really?).  He played in the team in the Uefa cup and the highlight of his career must have been when Portsmouth bid for him although it was rejected by Blackburn.  He became captain and signed a new deals which should have kept him at the club until the summer  of 2013 but under Steve Kean he was demoted to vice captain and after a knee injury  in 2010-11 season  he signed for Spurs and the the manager who likes a big squad, Harry Redknapp in January 2012.  Perhaps Shirley missed that bit and thought he was still there?

One final possible reason is that Shirley herself came from Blackburn. We all know about the boat journey over, but did Shirley in fact hail originally from Blackburn, near Hawkes Bay in New Zealand?

In footballing terms, Blackburn founded in 1875 had their greatest successes pre 1930s.  That was until 1991 when they were taken over by steel baron Jack Walker and a year later they signed Kenny Dalgish as manager and with the likes of Alan Shearer (record fee of £3.5million) and Chris Sutton playing for them in 1994-1995 season they became one of only five teams to win the Premiership title (what a boring competition that is - anyone could win CCC).  One of the classic matches of that era was the FA Cup match played on 8th January 1994 where Blackburn took the lead three times only for Portsmouth's Alan McLaughlin to equalise each time. Amy, you won't remember - but I was there :-)

Tuesday, 28 August 2012

Erm, just back from 10 days holiday and the 'Olympic' blog has gone all footbally.

Is it too late for me to get involved? At the risk of losing quite a lot of money, I should point out that I grew up in Derby, so if the Rams are still unclaimed I'll give them a go.

CCC - Results & updates

Friday 24th August

Margs2Mick2

After Mick's (non) prediction of first scorer and score, he failed on both accounts as his team visiting Margs took an early lead before that advantage was cancelled out and then saw his team go behind before securing a point on 57 minutes. Still think you should have given all three points to me Mick :-)

Match of the Day!

Well the match of the Day was a bad choice with the match described as uninspiring and it was the only goal-less meeting of the Championship this weekend. Bad choice!

Jane0Amy0

There were comfortable home wins for Andy over Anna and Scott over Chris. However, when I say comfortable they were ok but nothing in comparison to Dan's 5-1 win over a Barnsley and Lyn's magnificent demolition of Jan - spurred on by Jan's 13th minute own goal, Lyn forged ahead and inflicted a 6-0 hammering over Jan. Will that score line be beaten in the Championship this season or have we seen the pinnacle from this week's team of the week?

Other wins by narrower margins (but less face it is the points and not goal difference that matters to us), was Shirley's 2-1 win over Pete after a 79th minute winner, Dave's 2-1 away at Peterborough and Ted's 3-2 over Millwall, clinched with an injury time winner.  Sue was unlucky to draw at home to Derby as the away team scored their goal in the 90th minute, whilst Keith lost at Bristol City and Paula remains bottom of the pile without a point after an away defeat at Colin's.  Start saving those pennies Paula!

Despite losing again, Paula's pence in the pound has fallen by 0.4p as Lyn's surge at the top has caused an increase for the pack (be it all of less than one pence).
