CCC last weekend's update

So whilst 11 of the CCCers were enjoying the sunshine down in Portsmouth, the rain in London caused the first casualty of the season with Amy's visit to Paula abandoned at half time due to a waterlogged pitch.  Shirley was high scoring against Neil as was Andy against Kevin.  Keith's team scored after 10 hours of playing but their first goal was actually an own one!  Keith only managed to secure a share of the points in the 87th minute with a penalty  Dan beat Anna but her team were down to 10 men. Here's al the results.

Keith borrows clothes!

Yes it is true, Keith swapped Ted Baker for Ted Luckett at the weekend as Millwall side travelled away without their kit and had to borrow Ted's Sheffield Wednesday's away kit for the match. :-)

CCC Match Reports & how much you owe

Top of the table Mick had the highest score of the weekend, beating Margs’ 10 man Bolton 3-0. Anna’s Burnley secured a 2-0 win over Kate’s Yeovil with two goals in five second half minutes and amy had the same scoreline against Shirley's Blackburn.  Dan’s Brighton claimed their first win of the season away at Chris’s Birmingham and Kevin’s Bournemouth beat Sue’s 10 man Wigan in a fiercely contested match whilst Jim’s Derby gifted Pete a win giving them an own goal for the only goal of the game.  Keith’s Millwall have not scored in the League since April and their fifth minute strike was disallowed before Andy’s Huddersfield took all three points with a second half winner.  Kelly’s QPR scored in the 90th minute to deny Jan’s Ipswich a share of the points.
In the draws, Scott’s Watford scored a second half penalty and a 90th minute equaliser to level (3-3) away at Jane’s Reading.  In the match of the weekend, Neil’s Barnsley let a 2-0 lead slip allowing Paula’s Charlton to score two in the second half and share the points.  Dave and Ted drew 1-1, Ted having taken the lead and should have taken all three points and Colin’s Middlesborough scored an injury time equaliser to deny Lyn’s Blackpool the three points.

Tuesday night saw Amy’s Doncaster tried to build on their previous success and scored two first half goals away at Sue’s Wigan but the home team denied them the win scoring two in the second half also with the equaliser in the 90th minute.

Scott had the score of the day with a 6-1 win over Kevin's Bournemouth. Jan's Ipswich got the next highest number of goals, helped by Keith gifting them an own goal in the 3-0 win. Amy, Jane, Ted and Dan all lost and have yet to gain a point this season. Whilst at the to As well as Scott, Lyn's Blackpool and Mick's Forest are sitting pretty with two wins out of two. Bolton have gone for the consistent approach of two draws. Sunday's match of the Beale brothers was a non-event 0-0 draw with most of us adjourning to the pub garden sunshine!.

JPT - the only cup that counts! Are you in?

JPT - The Only Cup that Counts or the Paint Pot. Whatever you can all – I don’t think Man U have won it! So are you interested in a sub competition for the JPT. There are 48 teams from league one and two, 32 play in the first round and 16 get byes. The draw is done regionally and it is official – Coventry is in the South! The first fixtures will be first week in September. Initial discussions among CCCers suggested Margs has Portsmouth, Anna has Coventry and all other teams are drawn out of the hat. Not sure how many of you want to go in, so that makes the rules a little tricky at this stage but suggest 50p a team, minimum 2 teams so you get one from North and one from South. You can have multiple teams and prize money goes to the finalists of North and South with the overall winner getting the most of course.

So please let me know by August 17th if you want to join in, if you want just one team or the maximum number of teams you would like.

Johnstone’s Paint is busily preparing for its eighth year of sponsorship of the Football League Trophy.

Northern Section West : Accrington Stanley, Bury, Crewe Alexandra, Fleetwood Town, Oldham Athletic, Port Vale, Shrewsbury Town, Tranmere Rovers.
Northern Section East : Bradford City, Burton Albion, Hartlepool United, Notts County, Scunthorpe United, Sheffield United, Walsall, Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Southern Section West : Bristol City, Bristol Rovers, Cheltenham Town, Exeter City, Plymouth Argyle, Portsmouth, Torquay United, Wycombe Wanderers.
Southern Section East: AFC Wimbledon, Brentford, Colchester United, Dagenham & Redbridge, Gillingham, Leyton Orient, Milton Keynes Dons, Northampton Town.
Northern Section byes: Carlisle United, Morecambe, Preston North End, Rochdale, Chesterfield, Mansfield Town, Rotherham United, York City.
Southern Section byes: Crawley Town, Newport County, Oxford United, Swindon Town, Coventry City, Peterborough United, Southend United, Stevenage.

CCC - results of first matches

In the early kick off on Saturday, Anna’s team benefitted from a Margs own goal early on but before half time Margs had equalised to 1-1, the final score. Sue’s Wigan had an emphatic start to their Championship season with a 4-0 win away at Neil's Barnsley, probably helped by the fact that the home team were reduced to 10men when there sub was red carded after just 5 minutes on the pitch. Lyn’s Blackpool beat Amy’s Doncaster 3-1 having taken the lead, let Amy’s team equalise and then scoring two late goals to clinch the win.

There were 2-1 home wins for Dave V Dan, Kelly V Ted, Jane V Jan and Kevin V Paula. Kevin had already taken the lead twice before Paula’s team was reduced to 10 men; Dave, Kelly and Jane were all trailing 0-1 before Dave’s team scored a 90th minute winner, Kelly’s team scored two goals in three minutes and Jane’s scored one in each half to clinch the points. Pete’s Leicester secured a 2-1 away win at Colin’s Middlesborough although I can’t tell you much about it as the BBC shows Middlesborough as having two goals to their credit!

It was a close match between Mick’s Forest and Andy’s Huddersfield, with Mick securing a 1-0 in the second half. Scott won 0-1 away at Chris’s Birmingham and new to the CCC, Kate’s Yeovil managed the same scoreline away at Keith’s Millwall with an 88th minute winner.

The Sunday fixture saw Jon go ahead with a first half penalty but Shirley’s Blackburn equalise with an 89th minute goal.

Who knew & what the media predicts

As I listen to the Burnley v Bolton fixture on the radio, who knew that it was the same opening fixture last year and both teams were part of the twelve that set up the Football League 120+ years ago.

But more importantly what is it predicted that your team will do this season....

The Championship has the reputation as one of the most difficult and gruelling leagues to escape from and this season is likely to be exactly the same.
Just 14 points separated the play-offs and relegation zone in the table last year so as usual the vast majority of clubs will feel that a good run could see them affect the promotion picture.
There are some exciting new additions in Bournemouth and Yeovil plus those coming down including FA Cup holders Wigan.

Most like champions
Queens Park Rangers have been installed as early title favourites and you can see why. Harry Redknapp has trimmed the squad by letting high-earners Djibril Cisse, Jose Bosingwa and Christopher Samba go and brought in some experienced names in - Richard Dunne, Karl Henry and Danny Simpson - as he seeks a hard-working team rather than a group of individuals.
Reading Nigel Adkins has had success with Southampton in the Championship so expect the Royals to be up there challenging.
As well as those two, Watford fans will be expecting big things. Having just missed out on promotion by losing in extra-time of the play-off final, Gianfranco Zola has made over 10 signings including eight free transfers from Udinese and they will be a real force again.

Promotion chasers
It is hard to know where to start as there are so many teams who will feel they could go up. Recent Premier League sides in Wigan, Blackburn and Bolton could all be in contention, especially the latter after their strong run towards the end of the last campaign. The Europa League could prove to be a distraction for Wigan as games could pile.
Elsewhere Nottingham Forest and Brighton will expect to be up the right end of the table again while Brian McDermott will be hoping to guide Leeds back to the big time in his first full season in charge. Leicester are also another club who are always a threat having finished in the top 10 ever since promotion back to the Championship four years ago

Relegation battlers

New-boys Yeovil are probably going to be underdogs in nearly every game this season and most will expect them to go straight back down. Elsewhere Burnley and Blackpool continue to struggle financially and with star players Charlie Austin and Matt Phillips respectively looking to be on the way out it could be a tough season for them.  Freshly-promoted Doncaster haven’t really added to their squad and have an inexperienced manager in Paul Dickov while Millwall and Barnsley are expected to be fighting down the wrong end again.

Odds for relegation from three bookies..... but what do they know.
  odds for relegation
